COVID-19

IT in a Post-COVID World

As is obvious, COVID-19 drastically changed how companies operate. While some changes impact the short-term, others leave a lasting impression that forever will shape how we conduct business. For more on that, see below:

Immediate Effects on IT

For Managed Services & Security Providers (MSSPs) like Thomas Guard/Thomas Group, the effect of quarantine has been largely positive. We are designed to work from home. We would like to visit our clients, but we can deliver almost every service remotely.

The need for our remote diagnostics and fixes has risen! The ability of large and small IT staff to respond has been challenged. More mid-sized firms are calling for quick fixes and staff augmentation. Thomas Group has responded with more overnight malware scans, increased upgrades, and increased diagnostics.

MSSPs have responded with Remote Worker Packages.
This is a new service born of necessity. Remote workers without secure hardware are loaned or given:

  • a PC
  • a second monitor
  • 4G wireless modem
  • WiFi router, webcam
  • VOIP softphone
  • Bluetooth headset
  • VPN
  • Office365
  • WebEx
  • setup and on-going support.

Everything is set up and tested before delivery. Call Thomas at 847-530-9105 if you need this!

What Comes Next?
Thomas Group has the unique perspective of working for Fortune 500 IT leaders and supporting firms with 1 to 20 PCs/Macs.I am hearing large-scale companies are pleased with work from home productivity and effectiveness. The previous stigma of allowing work from home practices and using contractors and has faded.

Big firms are not planning to return to business as usual. They do not plan to allow random visitors in offices. The risk/reward is too high. In fact, if you fly into their city to visit, you will be considered more dangerous than the Jimmy John’s delivery person. Out-of-town visitors will be considered Freaky Infected.

One more view of the crisis: I will leave you with this quote from a frustrated engineer. “If my company opens its offices only on Sundays after the quarantine, I will gladly go to work to escape these four walls.”
